Vandaag openen we de Kluis van de Flops voor Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) met ‘Fanfare fort he common man’. Keith Emerson schreef het arrangement van dit nummer, dat oorspronkelijk in 1942 was geschreven door Aaron Copland. De song was te vinden op de ELP LP ’Works, volume I’. Het trio had eerder Copland’s “Hoedown” aangepast voor het Trilogy-album in 1972. De singel ‘Famfare fort he common man’ werd uitgeroepen tot Paradeplaat van de TROS in 1977. De radio edit duurde nog geen drie minuten, maar op het ‘Works, volume 1’ album maar liefst meer dan 9 minuten.
Greg Lake, die ook de producer van ‘Fanfare fort he common man’ was, memoreert: “It was just wonderful how it came about: We were recording in Montreux, Switzerland, in 1976, and Keith was playing it as a piece of classical music. I played this shuffle bass line behind him and all of a sudden it started to connect. Then Carl came in and we three started to play it. Luckily, the engineer had a two-track running, and that is what’s on the record – the first time we played through the piece.” Het nummer stond vier weken in de Tipparade genoteerd. In Engeland was het echter een groot commercieel succes en bereikte daar de 2e plaats in de Britse charts.
