Nu Britney Spears eindelijk verlost is van de strenge bewindvoering van haar vader, kan het popidool eindelijk weer doen wat ze wil. Dus toen Elton John haar vroeg een duet met hem op te nemen, zei ze gelijk volmondig ‘ja’. De release van ‘Hold Me Closer’ markeert de officiële muzikale comeback voor Britney, die sinds 2016 geen nieuwe muziek meer uitbracht. Het zaadje voor een samenwerking werd al gepland in 2014, toen de twee elkaar ontmoetten tijdens de jaarlijkse Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. Een jaar later tweette Britney dat ze dol was op ‘Tiny Dancer’, Eltons klassieker uit 1971. Elton wist gelijk dat Britney’s herkenbare stem perfect zou zijn voor ‘Hold Me Closer’.
