We blikken terug naar 23 maart, maar dan in 1985! Op deze dag komt ‘You Spin Me Round’ (Like A Record) van Dead Or Alive binnen in de Nederlandse Top 40. Deze singel werd o.a. geschreven door frontman Pete Burns en het was de eerste productie van Stock, Aitken & Waterman die de Nederlandse hitlijsten haalde. OP 1 maart werd het nummer op Hilversum 3 uitgeroepen tot AVRO`s Radio en TV Tip. In ons land bereikte het nummer de 6e plaats; in Engeland was het een dikke nummer 1 hit. Frontman van de Britse new-wave band was Pete Burns.
Dead Or Alive kwam voort uit het voormalige Nightmares In Wax (1980). Tussen 1980 en 1983 transformeerde de sound van Dead Or Alive van gotische post-punk naar New Wave en dat resulteerde in 1983 tot het tekenen van een contract bij het label Epic Records. Het eerste album kwam uit in 1984: ‘Sophisticated Boom Boom.’ Het eerste succes werd het nummer ‘Misty circles’, dat in 1983 de 4e plaats bereikte in de Amerikaanse dance chart. Ook ‘That`s the way I like it’ werd daar een succes en werd hun eerste Engelse Top 40 hit.
Met ‘You spin me round’ (like a record) van het album ‘Youthquake’ scoorde de band wereldwijd een grote hit. Hoe het nummer tot stand kwam, legde Pete Burns uit in zijn biografie: “How did I write “Spin Me”? I listened to Luther Vandross’s ‘I Wanted Your Love’. It’s not the same chord structure, but then that’s the way I make music – I hear something and I sing another tune over it. I didn’t sit and study the Luther Vandross album – I heard the song and it locked. […] I’m trying to structure the music and I know what I want. […] It’s like do this, do this, do this – and suddenly it hits. I don’t want to do Luther Vandross’s song, but I can still sing the same pattern over it. And there was another record, by Little Nell, called “See You ‘Round Like a Record”. […] So I had those two, Van Dross [sic] and Little Nell and – bingo! – done deal.”
‘You spin me round’ bereikte in Engeland de eerste plaats en leverde Dead or Alive een platina plaat op. In de Nederlandse Top 40 behaalde de Britse band de zesde plaats.
