Op 17 november, maar dan in 1979, komt XTC binnen in de Nederlandse Top 40 met ‘Making plans for Nigel’. Het nummer werd geschreven door Colin Moulding, de bassist van de Britse band en was afkomstig van hun LP ‘Drums And wires’. Het nummer betekende de doorbraak voor XTC. Het is een nummer over dominante ouders, die zogenaamd “plannen maken” en slechts “het beste voor je willen”. Ook al is dat niet zoals je je eigen toekomst ziet. Oprichter van XTC, Moulding, noemde het nummer ‘semi-autobiografisch’.
Hij vertelt: “I didn’t know where it came from. That phrase popped into my head, and one line followed another. Before I knew it, I’d written three parts of the song, and the rest of it just kind of fell in line probably a day or two later. … When I was about 16, my father wanted me to stay on in school. But by that time, I really didn’t want to do anything other than music, I think. … So, in a way, is it autobiographical? Well, a little bit. I knew somebody called Nigel at school. But I think that, when you write songs, it’s a lot of things all wrapped up, like in your dreams. Your dreams are kind of bits and pieces of all the walks of life you’ve been in.”
De singel werd destijds in de radioshow De Avondspits van Frits Spits uitgeroepen tot Steunplaat. ‘Making plans for Nigel’ werd in een aantal landen een radiohit. In Canada behaalde de plaat de 12e positie in de hitlijst en in Engeland de 17e positie. ‘Making plans for Nigel’ bereikte de 32e positie in de Nederlandse Top 40.
