Op 24 februari, maar dan in 1968, komt Status Quo binnen in de Veronica Top Veertig met ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’. Het nummer werd geschreven door Francis Rossi en was de eerste single van de band. Het stond op hun debuut LP ‘Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo. Feitelijk was ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’ bedoeld als B-kantje voor ‘Gentleman Joe’s Sidewalk Cafe’, maar op het laatste moment veranderde het label en de band gelukkig van mening. Het resultaat was de twaalfde plaats in de Billboard Hot 100 en een top tien notering in Engeland.

The “matchstick men” (luciferhoutjes mannen) in het nummer refereren aan schilderijen van L.S. Lowry. Over de single memoreerde Rossi later: “I wrote it on the bog (toilet). I’d gone there, not for the usual reasons…but to get away from the wife and mother-in-law. I used to go into this narrow frizzing toilet and sit there for hours, until they finally went out. I got three quarters of the song finished in that khazi. The rest I finished in the lounge.” Ozzy Osbourne & Type O Negative coveren dit nummer in 1997 voor de soundtrack van de film Private Parts, een biografie over de Amerikaanse shockjock Howard Stern. Status Quo behaalde de 4e plaats in de Veronica Top Veertig met ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’.
