‘Africa’,‘Rosanna’ & ‘I can’t stop loving you’: wie kent deze klassiekers niet van Toto? Maar de Amerikaanse soft rockband was niet succesvol met al haar nummers. In de kluis van de Flops diepen we ditmaal een single op van Toto, die het hier niet haalde: ‘99’. Het nummer werd geschreven door David Paich, toetsenist en één van de oprichters van Toto. De Amerikaanse band had in 1978 met ‘Hold the line’ hun naam gevestigd. Het nummer, een bescheiden hit in Nederland, was afkomstig van het debuutalbum ‘Toto’. Voor dit album ontvangen ze een Grammy Award-nominatie voor Best New Artist. De opvolger ‘I’ll supply the love’ (1979) flopte. Dit overkwam ook ‘99’.
David Paich haalde zijn inspiratie voor dit nummer uit de science fiction film THX-1138, van George (Star Wars) Lucas. ‘Paige legt uit: “This movie is set in the 25th-century in a totalitarian state where mankind is stripped of any individuality. People are numbered drones, and a government-enforced program of sedation controls the populace. Lucas used THX as the name for his movie theater sound system.” De geflopte single ‘99’ van Toto stond op het album ‘Hydra’ uit 1979.
