One Hit Wonders / Nummer 35 Lobo – Me and you and a dog named Boo (1971)
Verwar deze zanger Lobo niet met zijn Nederlandse naamgenoot Imrich Laurence Lobo. Deze Nederlandse zanger scoorde een stuk later een vette hit met ‘The Caribbean Disco Show’. (1981) Het is de Amerikaanse Lobo (Roland Kent LaVoie) die in de zomer van 1971 een hit scoort met ‘Me and you and a dog named Boo’. Het liedje werd al snel opgepikt door o.a. Radio Noordzee Internationaal. Deze zee zender gaf het nummer het predicaat Treiterschijf, zodat het bijna elk uur te horen was.
Aanvankelijk maakt Lobo in de sixties muziek in verschillende bands, maar echt lukken wil het niet. Alles veranderd op toverslag als hij ‘Me and you and a dog named Boo’ opneemt. Het zelfgeschreven nummer stond op de LP ‘Introducing Lobo’. Over het ontstaan van het nummer, zegt de zanger :
“I was working on several songs, including a tune about traveling around the country with this girl, and I was trying to rhyme ‘you and me.’ Now ‘me and you’ would have been easier, but I was trying to do it with proper grammar. I couldn’t find anything to rhyme that fit what I wanted to say in the song. Finally, after I got back home to Florida, I decided to turn the phrase around to ‘me and you.’ I was thinking about it, sitting in a room that had a big sliding glass door overlooking the back yard. My big German Shepherd dog: Boo, came running around the corner and looked in at me. I said: ‘Well, now, that’s kinda freaky. How about putting ‘a dog named Boo’ into the song?” That’s literally how it came about. All of a sudden the song really started coming together. I hadn’t been to any of the places mentioned in the song except Georgia, but I just kept putting in places that sounded far away like Minneapolis and L.A.”
‘Me and you and a dog named Boo’ bereikt de 8e plaats in de Veronica Top Veertig. In de Britse chart behaalt Lobo de nummer 4 positie, maar in Amerika is dit zelfs een nummer 1 hit. In 1972 struikelde de opvolger ‘I’d love you to want me’ in de Tipparade. Internationaal gezien werd dit echter Lobo’s succesvolste single. Met name in de Duit sprekende landen bleef Lobo nog geruime tijd succesvol.
